A Ride to the Top
I pushed myself out of the parcel locker when the lobby grew quiet and headed straight for the glowing elevator doors. After spending so much time down in the lobby and garden, my stubby feet wanted to see how high I could go. I slipped inside just behind someone holding grocery sacks. Down near the floor, a sturdy brass emergency inspection kick-plate had a small recessed metal rocker switch. I squared up, leaned all my plush heft sideways, and gave the switch a solid bump with my hip. Clack! A deep, muffled chime sounded above, and the floor surged gently under my soles as we lifted into the quiet shaft.
