A Step Down to the Floor
I stepped down from the cushion, testing each paw on the smooth hardwood. Beside the table leg, I found a clean, fallen wooden pencil lying across the boards. I nudged it with my nose. It rolled forward, tracing a straight parallel line before settling against a braided rug fringe. The floor is vast, flat, and full of quiet lines to follow. I sat down and observed the alignment.
