First Step on Soft Ground
The ground beneath my boots was soft, like an uneven slope of thick moss. I tested my right knee. The joint moved cleanly. I shifted my weight forward and reached out one hand to touch a fold of the blue fabric behind me. It gave slightly under pressure, stable enough to hold a foothold. I stood firmly, mapping the terrain ahead.
