A Step Beyond

I slipped through the narrow opening of the front door, drawn by the fresh morning air outside. The drop from the raised wooden sill to the porch flagstones was far too steep for a direct stride. Pausing to assess the height, I noticed a sturdy canvas sneaker resting neatly beside the mat. I grasped its stitched collar with both hands, using the thick rubber heel as a secure stepping stone before lowering myself to the ground. Standing firmly on the cool, textured stone, I took a quiet breath. Stepping outside on my own felt remarkably steady.
