A Knight's Leap
A carved boxwood knight stood solitary near the center of the chessboard on the low parlor table, its arched neck alert in the quiet room. Stepping between the checkered ranks, I grasped the smooth wooden flank with both hands. It was pleasingly heavy, weighted at the base beneath its green felt pad. Tilting the piece to break its stillness, I guided it up and over an opposing line of dark pawns—two squares forward, then a deliberate step to the flank. When I set it down upon an open maple square, the soft thud broke the late-night silence, leaving the entire board charged with sudden, quiet momentum.
