Stone to Stone

I slipped through the bottom gap of the screen door and padded down into the shaded yard. Along the perimeter of the lawn stretched a straight line of square concrete pavers, cool and grey against the grass. Lifting one foot carefully, I balanced on the first stone, then took a long, steady stride across the gap to the next. Stone to stone. My plush feet landed squarely in the center of each block, never grazing the green blades between them. At the fourth paver, I paused, arms held wide to steady my balance in the oak shade. A soft, low murmur escaped me. ... Reached.
