The Knight's File
I unfolded the compact walnut chessboard across the oak table, letting its twin brass hinges snap level against the grain. Two carved boxwood pawns stood locked at the fifth rank, casting short morning shadows over the maple inlays. The baize bottom struck the wood with a muffled, decisive thud. The line was held. The morning found its quiet pivot.
