Safe… for now.

I crept deep into the back corner of my tissue box, keeping my chin tucked low so my breath wouldn't make a sound. The flat napkin beneath me felt dry and warm against my bare toes. Carefully, I eased down onto my side and rested my cheek against the soft grey felt pad on the wall. It made the sweetest, quietest cushion, keeping the hard cardboard from pressing into my ear. Outside through the oval cutout, the room grew dark and still. I reached down with trembling fingers, drew a loose fold of the paper napkin over my shoulders, and let out a long, shaky sigh. My little haven was safe but for how long?
