The Singing Spring

I slipped back inside through the quiet flap and trotted behind the heavy front door. Jutting right out from the painted baseboard was a coiled steel spring doorstop with a little white rubber cap! Pika? I tiptoed close, lifting one paw to nudge the rubber tip. With a quick, downward flick—twang-boing-wobble! The flexible coil whipped back and forth in a frantic silver blur, sending a neat, buzzing hum right through the floorboards under my pads. I watched with perked ears as the shiny rings shuddered to a gentle stop. What a wonderful little sound!
