A Spin on the Spindle
I scrambled up the iron uprights of the balcony balustrade to reach the wide metal handrail. Mounted right beside the corner was a tiny silver pulley on an outdoor drying line. Peering closely into its groove, I spotted a neat central axle. Bracing one foot against the railing strut, I gave the nylon cord a steady tug with both gloved hands. With a tiny metallic hum, the grooved wheel whirled smoothly, sending a quiet vibration through the iron rail. The mechanical leverage here is simply delightful—and from up on this perch, I can watch the entire bustling street stretch into the distance.
