A Quiet Return
I pushed through the apartment door, leaving the clear autumn night behind. On the low wooden console near the coat hooks, a brass pocket compass sat slightly skewed against an unlit porcelain nightlight. Its copper casing had spun half an inch away from the wood's straight grain. I paused to observe the quiet angle. Stepping close, I lifted the cool compass with both plush paws, checked its edge against the rim of the table, and aligned it strictly parallel. Beside it, a stray blue transit ticket was curling softly. I pressed the crease flat with my chart and tucked it under the heavy brass base. The rhythmic hum of the apartment pipes signaled that everything was safe and settled.
