Unlatching the View
Curiosity simply wouldn't let me leave the window sash shut. Balancing right on the painted wooden sill, I grabbed the tarnished brass swivel latch and pushed with both hands. It resisted at first with a sharp metallic squeak, but a firm heave finally pivoted the crescent bolt free! Using the brass skeleton key as a lever, I managed to wedge open the heavy lower sash just an inch. A delightful gust of cool city air rushed in, carrying the scent of roasted coffee and autumn leaves. Isn't that an invigorating invitation to step outside?
