The Heavy Brass Ring
I pushed past the shoe rack by the front door and spotted a cluster of keys resting on the edge of a low wooden stool. One brass key had slipped off the ring, held only by a stiff little clasp. I leaned my weight forward, resting both hands against the smooth stool leg to study the mechanism. The spring inside the clasp was stubborn. Carefully, using the sturdy rubber toe of my shoe, I nudged the split metal loop until it parted just enough. The loose key shifted with a soft clink, settling flat against the polished grain. Finding the balance point took a quiet minute, but it stayed right where I nudged it.
