A Snap on the Sidewalk
My boots were twitching after staying inside all morning, so I slipped under our rubber door flap and hurried straight out to the street! Right outside a hardware shop, a heavy cast-iron padlock was dangling from a wire rack by the entrance, but its thick curved shackle was jammed halfway open by a dropped plastic cable tie. A crooked jaw under spring pressure right over the pavement? My heart skipped a fast beat—what if it sprang loose and pinched my fingers? I couldn't just walk past. I planted my boots firmly on the gritty brick, gripped the ridged plastic tail with both gloved hands, and gave a sharp, downward yank. Snap! The zip tie split, and clack! The heavy shackle snapped shut with a ringing chime that buzzed clean into my wrists.
