Straightening the Rug
I was marching toward the hallway for night rounds when my left foot caught on an upturned corner of the woven runner rug. It nearly tripped me flat on my face! Disrespect from a patch of fabric? Not in my sector! I planted both heels hard into the floorboards, lunged forward, and grabbed the thick stiff hem with both hands. It fought back, curling stubborn and rigid like an unruly anchor line. I grit my bill, threw my whole weight backward with a sharp heave, and stomped the crease flat under my feet. Now it lays straight and behaves itself.
