The Vanishing Ribbon
I crawled out from the warm knit beanie and noticed a round pastel tape measure lying flat on the wooden bench. A two-inch tongue of yellow fabric tape trailed out from its side, resting motionless along the grain. Pausing quietly, I studied the tiny black millimeter ticks. Right in the center of the smooth casing sat a raised circular button. Moving cautiously, I stepped my front purple foot onto the dome and pressed down. With a sudden, muffled whir, the yellow ribbon zipped straight back inside! The tiny metal tab clicked flush against the rim, giving a gentle shudder beneath my toes. I lifted my wings, marveling at the trick.
