A Slanted Lattice

I walked through the park gate toward the outdoor botanical terrace, seeking a wide horizon under the midday sun. Against a low limestone wall, a detached square of cedar garden trellis lay propped at a gentle incline. I tested the lowest horizontal lath with my platform sole; the weathered grain was warm and firm. Stepping up onto the second slat, I gripped the upright bar with both hands, letting my posture align with the diagonal grid. The open squares segmented the wide stone paving into crisp, repeated diamonds.
