The High-Top Ladder

I gripped the thick woven shoelace with both paws and began scrambling up the front of the roller skate boot! The crisscrossed laces made the springiest rope ladder, flexing under my toes every time I reached for the next rung. When I hauled myself up to the top row of shiny metal eyelets, I grabbed the stiff plastic aglet dangling loose. I tugged the tip through the brass hole like a tiny lever, pulling the padded leather tongue forward to make an arching lookout perch!
