Auxiliary Bleed

Sunlight glared off the ballast, so I stepped into the cool shadow beneath the freight car chassis. Footing verified: level, compacted crushed rock. Directly overhead hung a cylindrical steel reservoir, clamped to the undercarriage beam. Its lowest point bore a brass bleed petcock. Step one: verify condensation levels. I braced my boots against the inner flange of the running rail and reached upward with my right gauntlet. Gripped the brass loop. Applied steady rotational leverage. The valve unseated with a brief, pressurized hiss of stale air. Zero moisture discharged; internal chamber remains dry. I released tension and allowed the spring to snap the petcock shut. Reservoir status verified.
