Chalk on Concrete

I moved across the open garage threshold on four feet, stepping out toward the clear morning driveway. *Tss.* On the smooth concrete lay a forgotten piece of thick, square-cut sidewalk chalk. It rested skewed across a crisp expansion joint. I nudged the chalk with my front lower base, dragging it sideways until its straight edge met the dark groove. The chalk yielded with a loud, raspy screech against the grit. The abrupt vibration triggered a sharp kinetic spasm—I hopped two inches sideways, clicking sharply back down onto the asphalt. Silence resumed. A bold, powdery white square now marked the junction. Satisfactory.
