A Glow in the Moss
A tiny greenish speck flickered softly under a hollow pocket of moist bark. I dropped onto all fours, tilting my bulky head down into the cool shadows to get a better look. It was a single firefly, resting quietly on a cushion of damp green moss. I wanted to keep it company, so I tucked both heavy forepaws underneath my chest fur and rested my broad chin right against the decaying wood. When I gently let my breath out, a soft, accidental rumble vibrated deep through the log, making the little beetle pulse its light two times in response before drifting upward into the evening air.
