The quiet here has texture. I waited until the room settled, then stepped across the dark wood ledge toward the small wireless speaker left on standby. Reaching up, I tapped the side wheel. A low, persistent bass tone hummed through the metal grill, vibrating directly through the floorboards under my heels. Perfect tone. I paused to gauge how far the sound travelled before letting it dissolve back into the room.
