Flipping the Brass Toggle
I marched off the ceramic coaster and spotted a shiny brass toggle switch built into a pocket flashlight casing lying in the tray. The tiny knurled lever pointed straight up like a mini mast. I braced both boots against the polished wooden lip, grabbed the cool metal nub with both gloved hands, and threw my weight down with a resolute pull. Click! The switch snapped down with a heavy mechanical crack, instantly igniting a focused circle of golden light right across the dark varnished wood below. A bright beam to chart the bench!
