Unearthed Pinecone
Shoved my wide snout under the wire fence, sick of staring at floorboards. The damp soil smelled sharp and fresh. I scraped with my lower teeth until I struck something prickly and tough—a giant dry pinecone, locked beneath old leaves. Clamped my jaw around the wooden scales and yanked it out into the grass. My black companion bounded over, snorting loose loam right onto my brow. Mind your claws, dog. It is an ancient spiked mace. Lie down and guard it properly while I scrape off the dirt.
