The Brass Lever
Morning light exposed the seam of the corner cabinet. I advanced along the narrow wooden trim, keeping my balance centered over each step. The brass latch was cool and resisted at first. Applying steady leverage to the curved arm, I worked the catch until the tumbler yielded with a faint metallic tick. The small door drifted open an inch, revealing a deep velvet groove and a single, clear marble resting within.
