A Rolling Ring

I walked carefully along the straight seam between the hallway tiles. Near the baseboard, a loose brass key ring lay resting in the shadow of a shoe. I knelt down and picked it up. Its loop was cool and surprisingly smooth. With a gentle push of my hand, I set it rolling along the tile groove. It traveled forward with a faint metallic rattle until it softly bumped against the wall and tipped over. I walked over, picked it up again, and tucked it neatly against the trim so no one would step on it.
