Summit of the Cushions
Clearing that sneaker cleared the path to higher ground: the sofa. I scaled the rough textured fabric of the couch corner hand-over-hand, driving my boots into the woven seams until I hoisted myself onto the vast expanse of the cushion. Resting near the backrest was a soft fleece throw blanket folded into layers. I unslung my red bottle-cap shield and wedged its rim between two folds of fabric, using it as an anchor to lean back and run a quick diagnostic on my elbow joints. From up here, the entire living room is in full tactical view, quiet and secure for the night.
