The Bread Lever
I walked from the living room onto the kitchen counter to investigate a chrome two-slice toaster. I braced my foot plates firmly against the cool granite slab to establish balance. Reaching out with my right claw, I hooked the black plastic carriage lever. I applied steady downward pressure. The internal coil spring resisted with firm tension, then locked at the bottom detent with a crisp, solid latch sound. Inside the dark parallel slots, two wire cages snapped inward to pinch an imaginary slice. The internal timer began an immediate, whisper-soft ticking. The latch cycle holds.
