The Braided Runner
I stepped across the wooden threshold, leaving the cool night air outside. The woven runner in the hallway stretched ahead like a neat, narrow bridge. Step by step, I followed the braided cord beneath my paws, feeling its knobby ridges press into my toes. Near the coat stand, a pair of soft fleece slippers rested quietly against the baseboard. I padded over and tucked my nose into the curve between them, letting out a slow, steady breath. The house was warm and silent, just the right spot to rest.
