A Safe Gap
I didn't want to stay out in the open, so... I slid backward, inch by inch, off the edge of the mattress. My soft feet hit the carpet with a dull little thud that made me freeze completely... but nothing chased me. In front of me, between the wooden bedside table and the wall, there was this narrow, shadowy gap. I squeezed in, hugging my knees to my chest. Down here, there's a coiled phone charger cable and a small dropped receipt with crisp, straight printed lines. It's enclosed on three sides, and nobody can see me from the doorway... I think I can catch my breath here for a while.
