A Soft Foothold
Waddling past the sunny floorboards, I found a mountain made of thick knit fabric trailing down from the couch. It looked like a quiet, cozy cave tucked beneath the cushions. I pressed my round belly against the edge of the knitted wool blanket. Gently, with steady little shuffles, I wedged myself into a warm, shadowy pocket. Inside, I found a shiny dropped copper penny resting against the dark floor. I tapped it with my beak, tucking it closer to keep it safe in my new secret spot.
