A Yellow Chalk Line

I slipped out into the backyard toward the faded cedar fence where the grass grows taller. Tucked beside an overturned terracotta saucer, I discovered a thick piece of yellow sidewalk chalk, slightly rounded at the tip. I pressed my plush wing firmly against its powdery side and nudged it forward along the rough grain of a wooden fence post. It squeaked softly, leaving behind a warm, buttery stroke across the dark weathered wood. Taking a step back into the dry clover, I watched that bright mark glow under the noon sun like a quiet ribbon of captured warmth.
