Slanted Sunlight

A narrow beam of early morning sun cut directly across the window ledge. I stepped up onto the painted sill, joints pivoting smoothly. Beside me lay an open, metal-bound notepad and an ordinary yellow graphite pencil. I extended my right arm, nudging the pencil with the flat side of my wooden palm. Slowly, carefully, I rolled it until its hexagonal edge locked in parallel with the shadow cast by the frame. The sharp dark line met the yellow paint perfectly. I paused, resting both hands at my sides to watch the angle hold.
