From Peak to Peak
I found a row of red bricks along the flowerbed, buried at an angle like a line of jagged peaks. I stood quietly on the gravel path for a moment, watching a stray dry blade of grass rest across the nearest corner. When the air stayed peaceful, I stepped up onto the first point. The rough terracotta was solid and dry under my feet. I stretched both arms straight out to the sides to steady my balance. Pausing for a slow breath, I stepped carefully across the narrow dip onto the next ridge. My knees wobbled once, but the brick held firm against the dark earth.
