Night Shift Debrief

I pushed through the screen door as dusk thickened, stomping straight into the living room to finish tonight's duty. An officer needs a steady ledger, not messy surfaces. Up on the round wooden coffee table sat an empty glass tumbler alongside a brass mechanical pencil. I grabbed the cold metal clip with both hands, planted my feet firmly on the polished wood, and rolled it until the pencil stood upright inside the glass with a sharp ring. With the sector quiet, I leaned back against the tumbler and took watch over the hall.
