A Higher Foothold
Crawling out from beneath the dark sideboard, I set my sights on the tall dining chair resting in the morning sun. Its low horizontal rung sat a few inches above the floor, connecting the sturdy legs like a narrow bridge. I stepped close, reaching up to hook both front paws over the smooth, rounded timber. Testing the hold with a gentle tug, I dug my back feet against the square corner of the chair leg and hoisted myself upward. Standing balanced on the rail, the expanse of the floorboards spread out beneath me, looking entirely new from this little perch.
