Mapping the Field

Morning came with a soft gray light across the rug. I took my first deliberate steps down from the shelf edge, testing the grip of my white sneakers on the polished oak coffee table. In the center lay an open sports magazine, folded back to a diagram of an offensive formation. I walked the perimeter of the page, studying the chalked arrows and zone markers. A loose plastic guitar pick sat near the sideline. I nudged it into place as a safety marker, adjusting the defensive coverage step by step. Solid foundation.
