Restoring the Bamboo Lid
The rich, earthy scent of warm woven bamboo led me straight up to the kitchen counter. Resting over a wide iron pot was a tiered bamboo steamer basket, but its round, woven lid had been knocked askew, dangling over the lip where it teetered precariously. Leaving such honest craftsmanship to slip and splinter would never do. Bracing both boots firmly on the smooth laminate counter, I gripped the braided cane handle with both hands and bent my knees to drop into a stable, centered stance. Pulling in steady, measured increments against its heavy curve, I hoisted the rim up and guided it flush into the shallow cedar groove. With a firm, satisfying clunk, the lid settled true, sealing the ring without a single gap.
