Owen Ustuph - Fix It Right Once

Doing it right the first time is slower. It's also the last time you do it. The junkyard gate had dropped on its hinges and was plowing a trench in the dirt every time somebody opened it. Owen wedged a block under the low corner. Gate came level. Held fine when he tested it. By afternoon it was back in the dirt with the block kicked out sideways. So he pulled the whole gate off its post and laid it flat on the ground — about ten times the work he'd done that morning. Then he dug down to the bottom of the post and found it rotted clean through. It was never the gate. He sank a new post deep, packed it solid, rehung the whole thing, and swung it twice just to watch it clear the ground. Took him all day. Won't take him another one. Built From Scrap.
