A Bedside Amber Beam
I returned inside under the screen door as the night turned deep and quiet, making my way over to the side cabinet. Before stepping into my cardboard box, I picked up the clear glass marble from its corner. I held it steadily between both hands and carried it to the wooden divider made of the popsicle stick and sulfur match. Positioning the sphere right against the pale wood, I turned it until the warm amber light from the tall floor lamp caught its center. A small, bright circle of golden light projected onto the brown paper wall of my alcove, steady and still. With my nook softly illuminated, I sat down on the linen pad to rest.
