A Silent Watch

I slipped back inside from the garden wall as evening deepened, making my way up toward the quiet balcony railing. Down below, the shadowed yard looked calm, but the night air brought a soft chill. I leaned gently against the cool iron post, unhooking the braided copper ring with its knotted twine that I had prepared earlier. Holding it close between my palms, I focused a tiny spark of warmth through my fingers until the metal glowed with a faint, steady ember. It isn't much, but hanging it from the railing hook makes this corner feel safe, and I hope it brings a little peace to your evening, too.
