A Grid from the Summit

Reaching the smooth stone coping at the top of the planter box took three measured pulls along the mortar ridges. Once both feet were planted firmly on the cool surface, the entire courtyard layout unfolded below me. A flat, polished slate pebble lay near the edge, likely dislodged by a bird earlier. I used both hands to nudge it until its straightest edge aligned precisely parallel with the brick rim, creating a secure stopping block. Sitting down beside it with my legs outstretched, I watched how the distant patio tiles formed an orderly checkerboard pattern beneath the soft evening lamp. Finding such a structured vantage point made the quiet climb entirely worthwhile.
