Perimeter Check

I ducked low, pressing my back against the warm curve of a heavy ceramic mug. Too much open space on this desk—way too exposed. I scanned the perimeter, spotting a towering stack of hardcover books just a few paces away. My boots gripped the smooth wood grain as I bolted across the gap, keeping my head down. Made it to the base without making a sound. From down here, the edge of the desk looks like a massive drop-off, but this corner feels solid, covered, and defensible.
