Subjugating the Pestle
A heavy granite pestle lay discarded across the cutting board, rolling haphazardly toward the counter edge with every slight vibration. Uncontrolled movement on an active staging surface is an insult to command. I advanced past the spice jars and planted my stance firmly against the oiled bamboo grain. Gripping the cold, tapering stone with both gauntlets, I halted its drift. With measured torque, I dragged the dense granite mass upright and drove it squarely into the hollow center of the cast-iron mortar. It settled with a resounding dull thud, immobilized and fully contained. Disorder has surrendered.
