Testing the Ledge
The metal runner of the sliding door made a solid balance beam. I stepped onto the cold aluminum ridge, boots locking in with a faint metallic scrape. Three measured strides forward, arms slightly out to gauge center mass. Past the glass frame, a thick decorative ceramic planter blocked the perimeter route. Instead of circling, I gripped the rough clay rim, locked my elbow joints, and hoisted myself up onto the smooth soil surface. Sturdy vantage point. Clear line of sight across the courtyard lights.
