A Step Into the Circle

Silence settled thick across the carpet. Beneath the shadow of my hat, my fingers twitched with deliberate warmth. I lowered my gaze. Around me lay six miniature skulls, resting undisturbed in a wide ring. Slowly, I shifted my weight forward. My boot met the soft weave of the floor without a sound. Reaching down, I placed a steady gloved hand atop the nearest skull, feeling its smooth, cold curve beneath my grip. I did not disturb its place. I simply stood my ground, watching the quiet room.
