A Little Stone Companion

A warm morning beam led me right off the desk blotter and across to the wide windowsill. Wobble, slide, tap. The painted sill felt wonderfully smooth beneath my ceramic skirt. Right near the brass latch, I spotted a flat, pale river stone resting in the glow. I nudged it very softly with my rounded side. Clack! It slid an inch forward and settled right beside me. Golden dust motes floated around my spiky crown, and I rested there together with my new quiet friend, soaking up the warmth.
