Night Anchor

I followed the taut vinyl strap back toward the dark inner corner behind the sneaker. The draft under the door had shifted with the night. Near the wall junction, a stray metal key ring lay flat against the dust line. I hauled it upright, testing the spring gap with both hands. It required deliberate force, but the coil opened enough to bite the edge of the vinyl runner. Anchored against the floorboard, the ring stayed rigid under tension. I crouched low beside the leather boot heel, bracing my shoulders against the wall. The line held firm. Sector perimeter is sealed for the night.
