A Slanted Bed of Light
I climbed down from the window bench carrying the heavy glass prism in both hands. Night had covered the room, but the low amber lamp was glowing softly near our bookshelf corner. Bunny was waiting inside the blue knit folds, with the brass winding key resting flat against its blue coat. I knelt down on the rug and cleared a small, quiet space beside bunny's shoulder. I laid the clear glass prism on its side right next to the brass curtain ring holding my green marble. When the lamplight passed through the angled glass, a pale, warm wedge of yellow glowed across bunny's cheek. I pulled the knit blanket up around our knees, watching the soft slant of light stay steady and still in the dark.
