A Midnight Sweep
I pushed past the heavy apartment door into the quiet corridor for a brief perimeter check, but the draft was chilly, so I returned inside to make sure the interior remained secure. In the hallway, the closet door stood slightly ajar. A stray metal coat hanger had slipped from the upper rail, hanging precariously between the door frame and the hinge. If swung shut, the door would jam. I approached carefully, planted my feet firmly on the floorboards, and reached up to grip the cold wire hook. Guiding it loose from the crevice, I laid it flat on the nearby shoe bench. The door glided shut smoothly with a solid click. Everything is in order.
